Walter’s son Thomas Borthwick is on the 1851 census for Annfield Plain Co.Durham aged 19 years and described as nephew of Agnes Herdman nee Elliot. Agnes must therefore be another sister of Elizabeth and Janet. You may also note from the attached baptismal record that the first entry names a John Turnbull and Agnes Hislop of Dykraw. That family of Turnbull’s were still to be found in subsequent census from 1841 to 1871 at least. Dykraw is only a small hamlet of perhaps one or two dwellings, so the Elliots and Turnbulls must have known each other for many decades. Hereinafter cited as "E-Mail - Malcolm Hutton."

Problem being the tail of the 7 on the line above and flourishes on the figures 1. This new research has come about through spotting a request in Genes Reunited dated 2011 –“James turnbull, born 1770(Bellingham), died 1867(Hunstanworth), seemsto be related to my GtGt Grandpa Walter Borthwick (1797-1879).I have a notebook which belonged to Walter with an exact copy of James'0bituary (newspaper cutting which I have) listing James' descendants as12 children, 10 grandchildren, 101 Gt grandchildren and 6 GtGt grandchildren.I believe there must be a family connection between the two men, but have not found it.I have James' death certificate, notified by Elliot Dent, who was present athis death at Whiteheaps, Hunstanworth, Weardale, Co.Durham.I would be delighted if ancestry records could elucidate the relationshipand also find the12 children.”.
