He was the second son of James Harvey and Helen Oliver, named for his mother's father. In 1851 he was living with his parents, James (a shepherd aged 31 from Roxburghshire) and Helen (25), three siblings - Thomas (5), Janet (2) and Elizabeth (3 months), two boarders - Robert McIntosh (an assistant shepherd aged20) and Sinclair Leich (a farm servant aged 22), and two house servants - Anne Duncan (21) and Jessie Sutherland (13) at Ausdale, Latheron, Caithness[3]. He was aged 3. His mother died soon after this, and his father married his house servant, Anne Duncan. James emigrated to New Zealand with other members of his family on the Ashburton in 1857 arriving on 26 November[4]. His father was employed to move sheep from Wellington over the ranges to the Wairarapa where the family settled. He married Harriet Welch on 8 September 1875 at Harriet's father's house in Taita, Hutt[5][6]. They had at least five children and several others that lived a few hours or were stillborn. He would take farmers to court for failing to comply with regulations regarding destroying rabbits[8]. On 13 September 1895, his unoccupied five-roomed house was destroyed by fire[9]. Arson was suspected. The house was insured for £200. Maybe one of the farmers he had taken to court for stock offences was getting back at him. He was committed to Porirua Hospital on 29 October 1923 and died there on 22 December 1924 aged 77 Years[10]. He was buried in Masterton's Archer Street Cemetery, Plot JH Row 1 Area Plan V[11][12]. His probate was granted at Wellington[13]. His sons-in-law, William Thomson and William Davies, were his executors, and he left his estate to his two surviving daughters, their wives.1 |
